Dart River Adventures hosted its 10th annual ‘Locals’ Weekend’ on 28 and 29 October, raising more than $5,300 for the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust, which works to protect endangered birds in the area around the Dart and Routeburn Valley.
Locals enjoyed horse trekking at Dart Stables, floating down the Dart River in a Funyak (inflatable canoe) and riding the Wilderness Jet through spectacular scenery at a special local’s price, with all proceeds going to the Trust.
Geoff Hughes, Executive Officer for the Routeburn Dart Wildlife Trust, said the significant contribution will make a big difference to the Trust’s work in the area.
“This donation has come at the perfect time, as we’re about to begin a new project with a focus on protecting the birds along the Dart and Rees rivers,” he said.
“Work will start next week when we do a baseline bird monitoring survey, to ensure a 140km stretch along these rivers is kept free from predators, so we can protect the bird species that live and nest there.”
Dart River Adventures Business Manager Harald Ulriksen said there was an impressive response from the local community, with a record number of locals from Queenstown, Glenorchy, Kingston, Arrowtown and Gibbston attending the annual Locals’ Weekend.
“We want to thank all the residents who participated in this worthwhile event,” he said.
“We are thrilled to be presenting our Locals’ Weekend cheque to an important cause like the Routeburn Trust, and we’re proud to be helping make a difference and protecting the special environment we operate in.”
Owned and operated by Ngāi Tahu Tourism, Dart River Adventures takes visitors on an exhilarating and spectacular journey, with a unique combination of breath-taking scenery, wilderness jet boating, Ngāi Tahu heritage and adventure.
Dart River Adventures is hoping to welcome many more locals over the summer months, and has introduced a brand new ‘Locals’ Card’ with special prices for those who live in the area, which will be available from November.
